GMT

Malaysia is a funny place.

We can spend 20 minutes debating where to eat, then drive 30 minutes to get there.

We complain about the weather, the traffic, the prices, the parking and just about everything else.

Then someone says, “Want to makan?”

And somehow, everything is okay again.

This is Malaysia.

It is complicated, contradictory, noisy, generous, frustrating, funny and endlessly interesting.

And that is exactly why we started Malaysia, Actually.

We are not here to simply repeat what is already making the headlines.

There are plenty of places doing that.

We want to look at the things underneath the headlines.

The people building businesses quietly.

The places that somehow remain hidden even when they are right in front of us.

The Malaysian habits we never question because we grew up with them.

The trends that seem insignificant today but might tell us something about where the country is heading.

The conversations happening over coffee, teh tarik, lunch tables and WhatsApp groups that somehow never make it into the news.

And, of course, the things that make us stop and say:

“Only in Malaysia.”

A different way of looking at Malaysia

Malaysia is often described through big numbers and big stories.

GDP.

Investments.

Tourism arrivals.

New developments.

Political headlines.

Corporate announcements.

But a country is not really defined by statistics.

It is defined by people.

The hawker who has been selling the same dish for 30 years.

The young Malaysian who is building a business from a bedroom.

The kopitiam that has somehow survived three generations.

The neighborhood that is changing faster than its residents realize.

The employee quietly figuring out how AI is going to change their job.

The family deciding whether to stay, move, spend, save or start over.

These are stories too.

Sometimes, they are the stories that tell us the most about where Malaysia is actually going.

And yes, we will talk about the fun stuff too

Because Malaysia would not be Malaysia without food.

We will talk about the restaurants everyone suddenly knows about.

The old places that deserve to be remembered.

The dishes Malaysians will drive across town for.

The strange food combinations that make perfect sense to us and absolutely no sense to anyone else.

We will talk about culture, business, people, places, technology, lifestyle and the little things that make everyday life here uniquely Malaysian.

Some stories will be serious.

Some will make you think.

Some might make you disagree.

And hopefully, some will make you laugh.

So, what is Malaysia, Actually?

It is not a news site.

It is not a tourism guide.

It is not another place telling you what you already know.

It is a place to be curious about Malaysia.

To ask better questions.

To notice the things we usually overlook.

To look at familiar things differently.

Because sometimes the most interesting story isn’t the one everyone is talking about.

It’s the one happening quietly next door.

Welcome to Malaysia, Actually.

We’re just getting started.

And there is a lot to talk about.

If you like stories about Malaysia that go beyond the obvious, subscribe and come along for the ride.
